Your wedding day will not go exactly according to plan. Something will run late, someone will forget something, and there will be at least one moment where you have no idea what time it is.
The solution isn't a perfect plan — it's a good plan with enough buffer built in that the small delays don't cascade into big ones.
Here's a template that actually works.
How to Read This Template
The times below assume a 5:00 PM ceremony and 6:30 PM reception at the same or nearby venue. Adjust backward or forward based on your ceremony start time.
Rule of thumb: whatever you think will take 30 minutes, budget 45.
Getting Ready (Bride/Partner 1)
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 8:00 AM | Hair and makeup begins (start with bridesmaids) |
| 10:30 AM | Bride in the chair |
| 12:30 PM | Dress on |
| 12:45 PM | First look with bridesmaids |
| 1:15 PM | Getting-ready photos complete |
| 1:30 PM | Light lunch — eat something |
| 2:00 PM | Rest time, touch-ups |
Getting Ready (Groom/Partner 2)
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 12:00 PM | Groomsmen arrive, start getting ready |
| 2:00 PM | Everyone dressed and ready |
| 2:15 PM | Getting-ready photos |
| 2:45 PM | Photo time complete |
First Look & Portraits (Optional)
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 3:00 PM | First look between couple |
| 3:15 PM | Couple portraits |
| 4:00 PM | Wedding party portraits |
| 4:30 PM | Family formal portraits |
Doing portraits before the ceremony is the single biggest timeline hack. You arrive at cocktail hour already done with photos and can actually spend time with your guests.

| 5:45–6:30 PM | Cocktail hour (couple finishes any remaining photos) |
Cocktail Hour
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 5:45 PM | Bar opens, hors d'oeuvres served |
| 6:00 PM | Couple arrives for golden hour photos |
| 6:20 PM | Couple joins cocktail hour |
| 6:30 PM | Guests invited into reception |
Reception
| Time | Task |
|---|---|
| 6:30 PM | Guests seated |
| 6:45 PM | Grand entrance |
| 6:50 PM | First dance |
| 7:00 PM | Dinner service begins |
| 7:30 PM | Toasts (limit to 3–4, 3 minutes each) |
| 8:00 PM | Parent dances |
| 8:15 PM | Cake cutting |
| 8:30 PM | Open dancing begins |
| 9:30 PM | Bouquet toss (if doing) |
| 10:45 PM | Last song warning |
| 11:00 PM | Reception ends |
Tips for Building Your Timeline
Work backward from your venue curfew. If the venue kicks you out at 11 PM and your caterer needs 45 minutes for breakdown, dinner must end by 9:30 PM.
Share it with everyone. Every vendor, every member of the wedding party, your coordinator, the officiant. Everyone should have a copy the week before.
Name a point person. Pick one person — your planner, your maid of honor, a trusted relative — to be the keeper of the timeline on the day. It should not be you.
Build in 10-minute buffers everywhere. Especially between getting ready and departure, and between the ceremony and reception entrance.
Account for transit time. Even five minutes of driving adds up when you have 150 guests moving from ceremony to reception.
Memorra's day-of schedule builder lets you create a full timeline, assign responsibilities to specific people, and share it with everyone who needs it.
